Last night, our teeny tiny wyandotte bantam, Cutie, hatched her first egg! This little girl is such great value. She's been clucky 5 or 6 times so far and is only about a year old. But we haven't been in a position to let her sit on a clutch (for her a clutch was 2) of eggs till now. And last night, the first one hatched.
The father is a buff pekin roo, and judging by the colours, her mum is a bantam Australorp named Prue.
Cutie, being naturally protective of her nest while off it for eating etc, displays some rather funny behaviour. She'll be eating or drinking and suddenly squark as if someone tried to grab her, jump in the air while ruffling her feathers - which is a sight in itself cos she's so tiny - and take off. All while cackling that cackle they make when they've just laid an egg. Which I find bizarre in itself, because if there's a predator around and it hears the mother and eats her, the eggs die.
